Description

A fine original watercolour of Goldfinches on Dandelion signed to the bottom right with his distinctive lions head. The painting measures 265 x 190 mm, vibrant colours on a darkish sugar paper, a few light marks. Simple wood frame 460 x 360mm. Painting in excellent condition, linen covered mount with gilt border. A stylish work. Provenance - Exhibited at Pearson & Westergaard, Glasgow - Fine Art Dealers. [Biography - Ralston Gudgeon RSW (Scottish 1910-1984) Ralston studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1928 to 1933. His talent was well recognised in 1933 when he was winner of the Glasgow Institute Torrance Memorial Award. In 1936, a one man show of his paintings was held in the Annan Gallery in Glasgow, where 35 paintings, mainly of birds, were exhibited. The success of this exhibition may have led to his election in 1937 to RSW, then the youngest man to date to become a member. Ralston was fond of animals and kept a pet fox while living in Kilbarchan. He illustrated Bayne's Getting to Know the Birds 1944; many of his bird painting have sold through Christie's annual spring sale devoted to birds. His style and particularly his "simple" backgrounds were derived from oriental influences. On 28th July, 1937, Ralston married Jessie Cassels Ritchie (1909-1999) in Gretna. Ralston's very successful artistic career was disrupted by his service in the army in WW2.
