Description
Second edition, 2 volumes, folio, contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked. Pp. (vol.I): [6], x, [4] (list of subscribers), [30] (index and supplemental index), 640; (vol. II): (4), 641-1153, [1] (blank). With 25 plates as called for by Upcott: engraved portrait frontispiece of Dugdale by Wenceslaus Hollar; 5 engraved double-page maps and 19 plates by Henry Beighton of which 14 are double-page, including 12 prospects of gentlemen's seats; copiously illustrated with 187 in-text engravings by Hollar and others, many full-page, depicting costume, seals, tombs, coats of arms, etc. woodcut ornaments & initials. Later reback in tan leather with gilt lettering and six raised bands to the spine, very good, strong. Original endpapers retained, with some pencil notes and tipped in catalogue entries for this title, the end papers little damaged & water stained to the bottom margin. Some damp staining to the title page and frontispiece of vol. I and a few other preliminary pages, generally good, variable damp staining to the bottom edge of vol. II with some associated cockling of bottom margin, but generally good. Plates very good. Provenance: with the bookplates of William Fermor of Tusmore, Oxfordshire, and the Barons Holland of Holland House. The first edition of 1656 was considered a landmark in British topography, and this 1730 edition is regarded as the best edition. A good to very good copy.
