Description

No date but c. 1730. Complete set of 18 numbered etchings (including title) by GERRAT VAN SCHAGEN after the original French edition by Callot Later (Victorian) half red morocco with red cloth boards; with light general wear and rubbing. Contents very good and tight, marbled end papers; unlike most copies the plates are NOT trimmed and laid down; the title page and first plate with a little paper reinforcement to edges of underside, a couple of plates lightly worn along plate marks with minimal reinforcement to verso (Japanese tissue), a couple of plates very slightly marked. A very good copy. Bibliographic note: Copied from Callot's 1633 Grandes Misères de la Guerre, his best-known work, depicting the horrors of war during Cardinal Richelieu's occupation of Nancy and surrounding area.
