Description
1825-1835. Volumes 1-5 with 24 hand -coloured engraved plates per volume, each divided into four parts, all with tissue guards. Total of 120 plates with 480 flowering plants represented. Accompanying text describing the species on each plate. Each volume with separate engraved and letterpress title pages (except vol. I which only has the engraved title page). engraved dedication page (to Queen Victoria) to vols. III & IV; indexes to all volumes. Fine uniform bindings of contemporary half-dark green morocco, with gilt lettering and decoration between four raised bands, marbled paper boards, all bindings in very good condition with slight rubbing only, a few corners a little more worn. Original red-pink marbled end papers with the small contemporary signature of "Clara Day" to each. Contents good and tight, a little foxing to engraved title pages and first few pages otherwise text pages very clean; plates all very good and bright, a few very slightly marked. A very good uniform run of the first five volumes of the first edition of this famous botanical work, in handsome contemporary bindings. (The Botanic Garden ran to 13 volumes finally ending in 1851),
