Description

1800-1826. Complete set of Shaw's General Zoology, Each volume is in two parts with the second part of volume 14 being the separate index volume, a total of 28 separate volumes, complete with all plates [c. 1,153 see biblioographic note at end], all in accordance with the "directions for placing the plates" in each volume. An excellent unadulterated set still in the publisher's original paper-backed boards, uncut, some pages unopened. All original adverts, erratas, directions for placing the plates, half-titles present as issued by the printer. Engraved vignette title pages to each volume and separate letterpress title pages. Internally very good, some pages lightly toned with a little very mild foxing, but generally very clean, plates very good, a few a little dust marked to edges, slight offsetting from plates, some uncut edges a little dust marked, bookplates to the front paste-downs, contemporary signatures to the head of the title pages of a couple of volumes, otherwise no apparent inscriptions. The bindings, never intended to be permenent, are generally frail, with some loose and a few detached boards, chipping to the paper spine coverings to a lesser or greater extent, number stamped to the base of each volume, a few bindings cracked and one or two loose pages at front/rear. Very rare in the publisher's original boards. [Bibliographic note. This was the first world review of amphibians and reptiles in English" (Adler p. 17) A number of references suggest that the full complement of plates is c 1,218, however we believe this to be incorrect, as this copy conforms with "the directions for placing the plates" bound in each volume, and but for one or two BIS plates the total is c. 1,153; the breakdown as follows: Vol. I. Part I. MAMMALIA. 1800. 70 plts.; Vol. I. Part 2. MAMMALIA. 1800. 52 plts.; Vol. II. Part I. MAMMALIA. 1801. 44 plts.; Vol. II. Part II. MAMMALIA. 1801. 68 plts.; Vol. III. Part I. AMPHIBIA. 1802. 32 plts.; Vol. III. Part II. AMPHIBIA. 1802. 54 plts.; Vol. IV. Part I. PISCES. 1803. 25 plts.; Vol. IV. Part 2. PISCES. 1803. 71 plts.; Vol. V. Part I. PISCES. 1804. 41 plts.; Vol. V. Part II. PISCES. 1804. 53 plts.; Vol. VI. Part I. INSECTA. 1806. 79 plts.; Vol. VI. Part II. INSECTA. 1806. 60 plts.; Vol. VII. Part I. AVES. 1809. 36 plts.; Vol. VII. Part I. AVES. 1815. 50 plts.; Vol. IX. Part II. AVES. 1815. 30 plts.; Vol. X. Part I. AVES. 1817. 30 plts.; Vol. X. Part II. AVES. 1817. 32 [31] plts.; Vol. XI. Part I. AVES. 1819. 17 plts.; Vol. XI. Part II. AVES. 1819. 34 plts.; Vol. XII. Part I. AVES. 1824. 35 plts.; Vol. XII. Part II. AVES. 1824. 29 plts; Vol. XIII. Part I. AVES. 1825. 30 plts.; Vol. XIII. Part II. AVES. 1825. 33 plts.; Vol. XIV. Part I. AVES. 1826. 30 plts.; Vol. XIV. Part II. AVES. 1826. General index. No. plts. George Shaw was responsible for the first eight volumes of the General Zoology published between 1800 and 1812, and volumes IX-XIV (on birds) were completed by J.F. Stephens in 1828. Lowndes records the work as having been published with black and white plates at "361 15s., or on large paper, with proof impressions, 531 4s.",]
