pp. vol. I: viii, 423, [1]; vol. II: viii, [2], 475 (bound without adverts and half-titles). First edition, first/second issue (vol. II. includes the important points of the first issue: Errata to the verso of the title page and the inserted postscript after p. viii concerning "a serious and unfortunate error"; vol. I. appears to be the second issue with "When" being the first word on page 297 etc.) Contemprary half leather with marbled paper boards, rubbed and faded to the spine, new paper spine labels applied (these are attached with reversible conservation glue only), a little chipped at the heads. All edges marbled with marbled end papers to match. Contents good and tight, contemporary book plates of Gertrude Dale to the front paste-downs; front and rear blanks a little foxed, less so to title pages, othewise unmarked, no annotation. A very good first edition copy.
